The Los Angeles personal injury hub has closed

For years, almost every personal injury case in Los Angeles County was funnelled into a handful of courtrooms at the Spring Street Courthouse. That system has been wound down, and a surprising number of law firm websites still describe it as current.

What happened

The Personal Injury Hub was a set of dedicated courtrooms at the Spring Street Courthouse handling PI cases from across the county. Beginning in October 2022 the court started a phased transition moving those cases back to local community-based Independent Calendar courts, and effective 8 January 2024, personal injury cases filed in the Central District are assigned for all purposes to Independent Calendar departments at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse.

Cases already pending in a hub court before that date generally stayed there until resolved, which is part of why the change has been easy to miss.

Why it matters to you

  • One judge, start to finish. An Independent Calendar department keeps the case from filing through trial, rather than the hub model where cases were managed centrally and sent elsewhere for trial. A judge who knows the file makes different decisions.
  • Your courthouse is likely closer. Cases outside the Central District are heard in local district courthouses — Long Beach, Torrance, Norwalk, Pasadena, Pomona — rather than downtown.
  • Trial dates mean more. Under the hub, a trial date was a date to be sent somewhere else. Under an IC department it is that judge's own calendar.

A small test of whether a site is maintained

If you are choosing a firm and its Los Angeles page still tells you your case will be heard at the Spring Street hub, that page has not been touched in over two years. It is not a reason on its own to rule anyone out, but it is a cheap and revealing check — and you can apply the same test to anything else on the page that sounds like a fact.

Questions people ask

Where will my Los Angeles injury case be heard?

If filed in the Central District, at an Independent Calendar department in the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. Elsewhere in the county, at the local district courthouse — Long Beach, Torrance, Norwalk, Pasadena or Pomona among others.

Does this make cases faster?

It changes how they are managed rather than removing the county's underlying caseload pressure. Having one judge throughout tends to produce more consistent handling, which is generally good for a case that needs real attention.
