Costa Mesa injury lawyer
Costa Mesa sits where the 55 freeway ends and dumps freeway-speed traffic onto surface streets, next door to one of the largest retail centers in the United States. Those two facts explain most of the collisions we see from this city.

The 55 terminus
The 55 does not end at an interchange; it transitions into Newport Boulevard. Drivers come off a freeway still carrying freeway speed and habits onto a signalized surface road with cross traffic and pedestrians, and the adjustment is not instant.
Rear-end and intersection collisions cluster in that transition zone, and they tend to happen at higher closing speeds than the surrounding street network would suggest. Speed at impact matters to injury severity in a way that is not always obvious from vehicle damage.
Retail traffic and parking lots
South Coast Plaza and the surrounding retail generate enormous vehicle and pedestrian volumes on Bristol, Sunflower and Anton, and parking lot collisions are a genuine category rather than a footnote.
Two things about parking lot claims. First, fault is rarely as simple as the reversing driver being wholly to blame — right of way in through lanes, sight lines blocked by large vehicles, and pedestrians stepping between parked cars all complicate it. Second, parking lots are comprehensively covered by cameras, and that footage is the best evidence available in a dispute. It also overwrites quickly, so the request to preserve it has to be immediate and in writing.
Falls on retail premises follow the same evidence logic. See slip and fall, where the entire question is usually how long the hazard had been there.
Nightlife on the Westside
The Westside and the 17th Street corridor carry a concentrated bar and restaurant scene, which produces late-night impaired driving and, occasionally, assaults at licensed premises. California's dram shop rules are narrow — service is generally not treated as the cause of injury — but the exceptions concerning obviously intoxicated minors are real and worth investigating where a driver under 21 is involved.
Questions people ask
I was hit in a shopping center parking lot. Is anyone liable?
Usually the other driver, and occasionally the property owner where the layout, signage, lighting or sight lines contributed. Fault in parking lots is genuinely contested, which is why the camera footage matters so much — and why a written preservation request needs to go out within days.
The collision happened right where the 55 ends. Does that change anything?
It can affect speed and therefore injury severity, and it can affect who investigated — the CHP handles the freeway, Costa Mesa PD the surface streets. Where exactly the collision occurred is worth pinning down early because it determines which report exists and who to request it from.
