Long Beach injury lawyer

Long Beach has the busiest container port complex in the western hemisphere attached to it, and the 710 freeway exists largely to serve it. That single fact shapes the serious injury claims that come out of this city.

Drayage traffic and truck claims

The 710 and the surface streets feeding the terminals carry a very high density of heavy goods vehicles, much of it short-haul drayage running container loads between the port and the inland warehouses.

Truck claims are not bigger car claims. There is a carrier with a substantially larger policy, a federal rulebook on hours of service and maintenance, and a body of electronic evidence — logging device data, engine control module downloads, dispatch records, in-cab video — that exists now and may be gone on an ordinary retention schedule in a few months. A preservation letter stops that clock. See truck accident claims.

Drayage adds a complication worth knowing: owner-operators, leased tractors and chassis supplied by third parties mean the driver, the motor carrier, the chassis provider and the shipper can all be separate entities with separate insurance. Working out who is actually responsible is early, unglamorous and frequently where the recovery is found.

The rest of the city

Away from the port, Long Beach has a dense street grid, substantial cycling infrastructure and an active pedestrian population along Ocean Boulevard and the downtown core. PCH and Anaheim Street are the arterials that produce the most serious non-freeway collisions.

Civil cases are heard locally at the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse, 275 Magnolia Avenue — one of the practical benefits of the return of personal injury cases to community courthouses.

Questions people ask

I was hit by a container truck near the port. What happens first?

A written preservation demand to the carrier and its insurer, immediately. Electronic logging data, engine data and in-cab video are retained on schedules measured in months and are frequently the evidence that decides the case. This is the one part of injury practice that is genuinely urgent in the first weeks.

Where would a Long Beach case be filed?

The Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse at 275 Magnolia Avenue. Personal injury cases returned to local district courthouses after the county's central PI hub was wound down.
